In this study, heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of water based ferrofluids in multiple
microchannels with rectangular cross section under constant heat flux boundary conditions were investigated.
Ferrofluids were prepared by the addition of Fe2O3.NiO nano particles into pure water chosen as base fluid in two
different volumetric ratios (φ=0.0025 and 0.005), and the effects of parameters like Reynolds number, particle
volume fraction on heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics were analyzed experimentally. Under laminar flow
and steady state conditions, heat transfer increased with increasing particle volumetric concentration. Minimum
8.6% and maximum 31.6% enhancement in heat transfer was obtained according to pure water. Nano particles
suspended into the base liquid caused minimum 16.4 % and maximum 36.1% increase in friction factor according
to pure water. Increasing particle volume concentration from 0.25% to 0.5% yielded 6.8% and 8.9% increase in
total heat transfer enhancement.
