Engineering Geological Studies of Rock Hewn Structures in Cultural and Historical Heritage Sites; A Case Study of Kayaşehir Underground City (Nevşehir)

Öz

The rock masses where the cultural and historical heritage rock-hewn structures are located and the natural materials used in their construction lose their initial properties and deform over time under the influence of environmental factors. As a result, the underground structures in question are exposed to some rock mass instabilities and lose their historical and cultural properties. This situation generally indicates the importance of engineering geology in the protection and management of historical and cultural assets. In this study, the possible rock mass instabilities in the rock-hewn structures used as “Church” and “Horse Stable” in the Kayaşehir underground city, which was unearthed during urban transformation works in Nevşehir city center in 2014 and consists of many rock-hewn spaces, were evaluated in terms of engineering geology. The rock-hewn structures in question were numerically analyzed according to the finite element method. Accordingly, while tensile stresses occurred in the ceiling and thinned side walls of the examined church, tensile stresses were concentrated in the ceiling section where the discontinuities of the Horse Stable intersected. In the numerical analyzes performed on the rock-hewn structures, the determined tensile stresses and strength factor changes provide meaningful results in the evaluation of possible instabilities. In the rock-hewn structures in the Cappadocia Region, the most important types of instability are block falling from the ceiling, over breaking, bending, flaking, weathering and shear failure in natural piers, decrease in ceiling rock thickness, rockfall at the entrances of the openings, weakening of existing support systems and low rock mass quality. Considering the cultural heritage nature of the region, in the selection of improvement methods against the mentioned stability problems, attention should be paid to preserving the natural texture as much as possible and to the historical importance of the structures. For this reason, it is very important for improvement methods to be evaluated and decided by a group including disciplines such as archaeologists, art historians, architects, restorers and competent engineers in terms of preserving historical and cultural structures and making them compatible with the current environmental conditions.

Kültürel ve Tarihi Miras Alanlarındaki Kaya Oyma Yapılarda Mühendislik Jeolojisi Çalışmaları: Kayaşehir Yüzey Yerleşkesi (Nevşehir) Örneği

Öz

Kültürel ve tarihi miras niteliğindeki kaya oyma yapıların bulundukları kaya kütleleri ve inşasında kullanılan doğal malzemeler, çevresel faktörlerin etkisiyle zaman içinde ilksel özelliklerini kaybederek deforme olmaktadır. Bunun sonucu olarak söz konusu yeraltı yapıları bazı kaya kütle duraysızlıklarına maruz kalmakta ve tarihi ve kültürel özelliklerini kaybetmektedir. Bu durum genel olarak mühendislik jeolojisinin tarihi ve kültür varlıklarının korunması ve yönetimi çalışmalarındaki önemini göstermektedir. Bu çalışmada, Nevşehir kent merkezinde 2014 yılında kentsel dönüşüm çalışmaları sırasında ortaya çıkarılan ve çok sayıda kaya oyma mekândan oluşan Kayaşehir yeraltı şehrindeki “Kilise” ve “At Ahırı” olarak kullanılmış kaya oyma yapılarda olası kaya kütle duraysızlıkları mühendislik jeolojisi açısından değerlendirilmiştir. Söz konusu kaya oyma yapılar sonlu elemanlar yöntemine göre sayısal olarak analiz edilmiştir. Buna göre, incelenen kilisenin tavan ve incelmiş yan duvarlarında çekme gerilmeleri oluşurken, At Ahırı’nın kırık hatlarının kesiştiği tavan bölümünde çekme gerilmeleri yoğunlaşmıştır. Kaya oyma yapılarda gerçekleştirilen sayısal analizlerde, belirlenen çekme gerilmeleri ve dayanım faktörü değişimleri olası duraysızlıkların değerlendirilmesinde anlamlı sonuçlar vermektedir. Kapadokya Bölgesi’ndeki kaya oyma yapılarda tavandan blok düşmesi, aşırı sökülme, eğilme, pullanma, doğal ayaklarda ayrışma ve makaslama yenilmesi, tavan kalınlığının azalması, açıklık girişlerindeki kaya düşmesi, mevcut destek sistemlerinde zayıflama ve düşük kaya kütle kalitesi en önemli duraysızlık türleridir. Bölgenin kültürel miras niteliği göz önünde bulundurularak söz konusu stabilite problemlerine karşı iyileştirme yöntemlerinin seçiminde doğal dokunun mümkün olduğunca korunmasına ve yapıların tarihi önemlerine mutlaka özen gösterilmelidir. Bunun için arkeolog, sanat tarihçi, mimar, restoratör ve yetkin mühendisler gibi disiplinlerin de içinde bulunduğu bir grup tarafından iyileştirme yöntemlerinin değerlendirilip karar verilmesi, tarihi ve kültürel yapıların korunması ve mevcut çevresel koşullara uyumlu hale getirilmesi noktasında oldukça önemlidir.
