Map Literacy Research: A Bibliometric Mapping of Scopus Publications

Öz

This study presents a bibliometric analysis of the literature on map reading and interpretation skills, aiming to reveal research trends, key contributors, and the intellectual structure of the field. A total of 143 academic publications indexed in the Scopus database between 1944 and 2025 were examined. The introduction discusses the importance of map literacy in education and the challenges in its development. The methodology section outlines the bibliometric process, data sources, inclusion criteria, and the types of analyses conducted using VOSviewer software. The findings section provides detailed insights into the distribution of publications by year, document types, countries, authors, institutions, keywords, and citation relationships. Highly cited works such as Liu (2010), Meyer (2015), and Johnson (2006) emerged as foundational sources. Journal and country analyses highlighted specific centers of academic visibility and influence. The results emphasize the interdisciplinary nature of map literacy and its enhancement through technological tools such as GIS and augmented reality. The conclusion underscores the growing interest and evolving dynamics of the field. The recommendations section offers targeted strategies for policymakers, researchers, and educators, focusing on curriculum integration, experimental studies, and classroom practices. This study contributes a comprehensive overview of the scholarly landscape and provides a roadmap for future research and educational development in map literacy.
