Evaluation of Nursing Students’ Anxiety and Anxiety Literacy Levels and the Relationship Between Them
Öz
Background: It is crucial for nurses to recognize anxiety symptoms in both themselves and in healthy or sick individuals to take necessary interventions for anxiety and improve the quality of care. High levels of anxiety literacy are expected in nurses. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate nursing students’ anxiety and anxiety literacy levels, and the relationships between them. Methods: The sample for this descriptive study consisted of 271 nursing students. Data were obtained using the Participant Form, State-Trait (STAI-S and STAI-T) Anxiety Inventory, and Anxiety Literacy Scale (ALIT-Scale). In data analysis was used t-test, One-Way ANOVA, and correlation analysis. Results: The mean STAI-S score among nursing students was 42.09±10.00, the mean STAI-T score was 46.31±8.59, and the mean ALS score was 10.20±4.01. A significant difference was observed in ALS scores according to gender, nationality, place of residence, family type, employment status, presence of a diagnosed mental disorder, presence of a family member with a diagnosed mental disorder, and year of study (p<0.05 for each). The top three anxiety-provoking situations in education were professional practices (34.3%), courses (17%), and exams (13.9%). The mean ALIT-Scale score for first and second-year students was significantly lower than that for fourth-year students (p=.003). No significant relationship was found between ALIT-Scale and STAI-S or STAI-T scores (p >.05). Conclusion: The findings indicate that the anxiety states and anxiety literacy levels of nursing students vary according to several factors. It is recommended that anxiety literacy be enhanced from the first year of the nursing education process.
