Determination of Individualized Supportive Developmental Care Approaches and Innovative Approaches of Neonatal Nurses
Öz
Background: Since the neonatal intensive care unit is one of the units where practice and care services are constantly renewed, and responses are received the fastest, innovative approaches of nurses in this field gain importance.
Objectives: To determine the individualized supportive developmental care approaches and innovative approaches of neonatal intensive care nurses and to and to examine the factors associated with these approaches.
Methods: This cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted between January 1 and January 31, 2024, with 92 nurses working in the neonatal units of a university and state hospital in the Black Sea region. The study data were collected using the “Introductory Information Form”, “Individualized Supportive Developmental Care Scale”, and “Individual Innovativeness Scale”. The data were analyzed using methods such as frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, median, t-test, One Way Anova, Kruskal-Wallis, and Pearson correlation test.
Results: It was determined that 83.7% of the nurses participating in the study had “a bachelor’s degree”, 54.3% worked “in the university hospital”, and 31.5% worked in the neonatal unit for “6-10 years”. All nurses stated that they reduced the lights, covered the incubator, and attempted to reduce noise. The neonatal nurses’ mean score on the overall Individualized Supportive Developmental Care Scale was 101.14±10.88, and the mean score on the overall Individual Innovativeness Scale was 53.74±7.54. It was determined that there was a significant positive correlation between these two scales.
Conclusion: The present study determined that although the individualized supportive developmental care levels of neonatal nurses were at a high level, their innovation levels were at the traditional level. Furthermore, the study found that as nurses’ levels of individualized supportive developmental care increased, so did their innovative approaches. It is recommended that the topic of innovation be addressed in professional and in-service training programs to enable nurses to think innovatively and develop innovative solutions to the problems they encounter.
