Analysis of the Sensory and Perceptual Aspects of Space in José Saramago’s Novel Blindness

The concept of space is not only related to the discipline of architecture but also to other disciplines because it involves human relationships. Literary works analyze space through the discipline of architecture. In novels, perceptual space is created through the character's multi-sensory perception, where senses become perceptions and perceptions become behaviors. The sense of sight dominates the perception of space, but other senses such as smell, hearing, touch, and taste also play a significant role in how space is perceived and given meaning. José Saramago's dystopian novel Blindness, which deals with the experiences of a group of individuals who lose their sight due to an epidemic, provides a unique opportunity to explore the production of perceptual space through the changing dynamics of space. As such, the novel is an ideal case study within the scope of this qualitative research project, which aims to examine the reflections of visually impaired individuals on space and analyze the perceptual and sensory aspects of space in the novel. Data were collected through purposive sampling and analyzed thematically, resulting in the formation of 10 themes expressed through 49 codes. The themes were transformed into visual expressions with form language. While Blindness has been the subject of numerous studies, this research project explores the novel from an architectural perspective, an angle that has not been previously explored.

José Saramago’nun Körlük Romanında Mekanın Duyusal ve Algısal Yönlerinin Analizi

Öz

Mekan kavramı yalnızca mimarlık disiplini ile değil, insan ilişkilerini barındırması sebebiyle diğer disiplinlerle de ilişkilidir. Edebi yapıtlarda mekânsal analizler mimarlık disiplininden yararlanılarak gerçekleştirilir. Romanlarda algısal mekan karakterin çok-duyusal algı edinimi üzerinden gerçekleşir. Duyular algıya, algılar davranışlara dönüşür. Görme duyusu mekân algılamada en baskın duyudur. Oysa mekân koklama, duyma, dokunma ve tatma gibi diğer duyular ile de algılanır, anlamlandırılır. José Saramago’nun Körlük romanı bilinmeyen bir ülkede aniden başlayan salgının dünyaya yayılması sonucunda bir grup görme duyusunu yitirmiş kahramanın yaşadıklarını ele alan distopik bir eserdir. Körlük romanında değişen mekân dinamikleri ile birlikte görme duyusunu yitiren karakterler üzerinden algısal mekân üretimi gerçekleşir. Roman bu özelliği ile mimarlık disiplini ile ilişkilendirilerek incelemeye değer bir örnektir, bu nedenle nitel araştırma desenine göre hazırlanmış bu çalışma kapsamında durum olarak seçilmiştir. Çalışmanın amacı, görme duyusunu yitirmiş bireylerin çok-duyusal mekan deneyimlerinin mekana yansımalarını incelemek ve romandaki mekanın algısal ve duyusal yönlerinin analizini yapmaktır. Doküman incelemesi yoluyla romandan amaçlı örnekleme tekniği ile veriler toplanmış ve veriler tematik analiz yöntemi ile sunulmuştur. Çalışmada göremeyen bireylerin mekan algısı ve mekânsal eylemleri analiz edilmiştir. Sonuç olarak, 49 kod gruplanarak mekanın duyusal ve algısal yönlerinin ifade edildiği 10 temayı oluşturmuştur. Sözel ifadeler imgeleştirilerek biçim dili oluşturulmuş ve biçim dili ile temalar görsel ifadelere dönüştürülmüştür. Körlük romanı, üzerine çok sayıda çalışma bulunan önemli bir eserdir, ancak bu çalışmada ele alındığı şekliyle mimarlık ile ilişkilendirilerek yapılan bir çalışma bulunmamaktadır
