Capital, Habitus and Symbolic Power: Symbolic Power Relations in the Film Aile Arasında (2017)
Öz
Popular comedy is one of the sites in which a society's hierarchies are most readily rendered as entertainment, and therefore one of the sites in which they are most effectively naturalised. Existing scholarship on the Turkish comedy Aile Arasında (Ozan Açıktan, 2017) has read the film almost exclusively through the category of gender, and has consequently treated the inequalities it stages as expressions of patriarchy alone. The problem addressed here is that such readings leave unexamined the economic and cultural conditions from which gendered hierarchy itself derives its force. Accordingly, this study asks how symbolic power is constructed, distributed and legitimised among the characters of Aile Arasında, and through which cinematic and social mechanisms it operates. The study is a qualitative, interpretive case study; the film was purposively selected on the grounds of its narrative structure, which brings two families of markedly unequal capital volume into a single field, and on the grounds of its exceptional audience reach. The findings indicate that symbolic power in the film is organised not by economic capital alone but by the relations of exchange among economic, cultural and gender capital; that the family disadvantaged in capital volume legitimises the dominance of the other by seeking its approval; that masculine capital can, under specified conditions, override economic capital and invert an established hierarchy; and that the dining table functions as a compressed field in which class distinction and gendered division of labour are produced simultaneously. The study concludes that Aile Arasında converts capital difference into comedy and, in doing so, reproduces the very hierarchies it appears to satirise. Its contribution lies in demonstrating that gendered inequality in the film is analytically inseparable from capital possession, and in offering a replicable category scheme for Bourdieusian analysis of popular film.
