Exploring attitudes towards infertility: insights from a primary healthcare setting

Öz

Aim: This study aimed to assess attitudes and knowledge regarding infertility among adults attending a primary healthcare facility in Turkey, along with identifying influencing factors.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among individuals aged 18-49 who admitted to a Hamidiye tranining and research hospital Family Medicine Outpatient Clinic. Participants completed the attitudes towards infertility scale (ATIS) and the Infertility Knowledge Test (IKT). Demographic data including age, gender, marital status, educational level, and reproductive history were collected.
Results: A total of 237 individuals participated in the study. The median ATIS score of the participants in the study was 50, and the median IKT score was 19. ATIS scores were lower among male (p:0,023), those who were married, had children, had experienced pregnancy, had lower education level compared to other groups (p<0.001 for all). Participants who expressed willingness to consider adoption if unable to have children had significantly higher ATIS scores (p=0.010). Higher knowledge scores correlated positively with more positive attitudes (p=0.006, R=0.178).
Conclusion: The study highlights a correlation between knowledge about infertility and attitudes toward the condition. These findings underscore the importance of educational programs aimed at increasing awareness about infertility and promoting a more positive societal attitude towards it.

Birinci basamak sağlık hizmetine başvuran bireylerin infertiliteye yönelik tutumların değerlendirilmesi

Öz

Amaç: Bu çalışma, Türkiye'deki bir birinci basamak sağlık kuruluşuna başvuran yetişkinler arasında infertilite ile ilgili tutum ve bilgileri değerlendirmeyi ve etkileyen faktörleri belirlemeyi amaçlamıştır.
Yöntemler: Bu çalışma bir eğitim ve araştırma hastanesi Aile Hekimliği Polikliniğine başvuran 18-49 yaş arası bireyler arasında tanımlayıcı kesitsel tipte bir anket çalışmasıdır. Katılımcılar İnfertiliteye Yönelik Tutum Ölçeği (İYTÖ) ve İnfertilite Bilgi Testi'ni (İBT) doldurmuşlardır. Katılımcıların yaş, cinsiyet, medeni durum, eğitim seviyesi ve gebelik öyküsü gibi verileri kaydedilmiştir.
Bulgular: Çalışmaya toplam 237 birey katılmıştır. Katılımcıların İYTÖ puanlarının ortancası 50, İBT puanlarının ortancası ise 19 saptandı. İYTÖ puanları erkeklerde (p: 0,023) ve evli olanlar, çocuk sahibi olanlar, hamilelik yaşamış olanlar ve eğitim seviyesi düşük olanlarda diğer gruplara göre daha düşüktü (tüm gruplar için p<0.001). Çocuk sahibi olamama durumunda evlat edinmeyi düşünen katılımcıların İYTÖ puanları anlamlı derecede daha yüksekti (p = 0.010). Bilgi düzeyiyle infertiliteye yönelik olumlu tutum arasında pozitif korelasyon saptandı (p = 0.006, R = 0.178).
Sonuç: Çalışma, infertilite hakkında bilgi düzeyiyle bu duruma yönelik tutumlar arasında bir korelasyon olduğunu vurgulamaktadır. Bu bulgular, infertilite hakkında farkındalığı artırmaya ve toplumsal olarak daha olumlu bir tutum geliştirmeye yönelik eğitim programlarının önemini ortaya koymaktadır.
