Human Capital Accounting in the Gig Economy: Measuring and Reporting the Hidden Balance Sheet of Platform Workers

Öz

The gig economy builds platforms and is not adequately registered on corporate balance sheets. This study develops a human capital composite indicator – an attempt towards quantification of the economic value of platform workers. The components of the Index include replacement cost data, present value of contractor earnings and algorithmic productivity scores. The analysis is backed up by panel data for 285 platform firms with 1,425 firm-year observations. Results indicate that Human capital of platform workers is quantifiable and measurable. Because this is a large accounting distortion, this value should not be reflected in the financial statements! It does not depend on the type of platform activity, although it can be pronounced, depending on the size of the firm and the nature of the regulation. In other words, the composite index will not be too sensitive to different selections of weights. The results are relevant to formally measuring platform worker human capital. The framework improves the financial reporting of gig economy activities for greater transparency and uniformity in the sector.
