Algorithmic personalization has become a key strategy, impacting how customers make spontaneous purchases and their lifetime value - Evidence from Brazil and Indonesia

Öz

While the effect of algorithmic personalization on impulse purchasing or consumer lifetime value with respect to the latter is under-researched both theoretically and empirically, researchers have a good sense of how algorithmic personalization has shaped consumers' behavior and attitudes toward the so-called “fast-changing” algorithmic personalization in e-business. The current study is grounded in the literature and builds an integrated conceptual work model that utilizes a multi-dimensional pathway of perceived value as the mediating variable and algorithmic transparency and perceived control as the proposed influencing variables on consumer trust and trust's effect on CLV, in addition to control variables of personality, power distance, and digital literacy; the model is PLS-SEM-based. All seven hypotheses tested based on the cross-sectional data of N = 177 adult digital consumers in Brazil ( n = 76 ) and Indonesia (n = 101) collected in October - November 2025 were validated. Algorithmically personalized impulse buying behavior has a positive impact on algorithmic personalization, but to some extent, this impact is mediated by the perceived price (indirect = 0.187) and emotional and social value. Some of the factors that promote this impulse response include Extraversion and Digital self-efficacy. The path between algorithmic transparency and consumer trust is partly adopted, but consumer trust (42.9 percent) is the most important mediator of the pathway, and nearly a quarter (20) percent of the total pathway. Further and importantly, consumer trust does not present a perceived variable that can be considered to be the biggest (b =0.612, f2= 0.489). High perceived control and high transparency are theoretically a synergy and higher than the sum of their parts (which is generally a high level between low vs high power distance and digitally literate consumers). A multi-group analysis indicates that the transparency-control interaction is significant when there is the moderating effect of cultural context and that the main structural paths are not specified by cultural context. It inverts the perception of transparency and perceived control as a second-order ethical issue, and sustainable CLV in the era of algorithms is a kind of trust-building process by literally empowering governance, in the company and/or the supply chain benefit.
