Respectful maternity and newborn care is a universal human right for every childbearing woman and newborn in the healthcare system worldwide. Quality care during pregnancy and childbirth is one of the key interventions to reduce maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality. These negative experiences of women during the birth process can cause permanent damage and deep emotional trauma in women. At the same time, the newborn is exposed to situations such as early separation from the mother, delayed first breastfeeding, and no skin-toskin contact, both immediately after birth and in the following periods. Individual centered maternity and newborn care is an individual-centered approach based on ethical, human rights and respect principles. It encourages practices that address the preferences of women and the needs of women and newborns during the birth process. Absence of ill treatment against women during childbirth does not mean respectful delivery and newborn care. Without a clear framework for provider behavior that reflects the principles of Individual Centered Maternity Care, it is difficult in practice to ensure that every woman and newborn receives respectful care. In this article, the definition, history and importance of respectful birth and newborn care are mentioned.
