The Function of Fantasy as Refuge: A Psychoanalytic Reading of “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” By James Thurber
Öz
Literary texts offer a privileged space for examining psychological dimensions of the individual. James Thurber’s short story “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” (1939) provides a particularly fruitful example in this context as it deals with a protagonist who, despite leading an ordinary life, constructs heroic alternative identities through a persistent act of daydreaming. This study examines how the contrast between Walter Mitty’s fantasy world and everyday reality reflects processes of desire, repression, and identity fragmentation in the individual. Instead of relying on a single psychoanalytic framework, this study employs three complementary approaches, each addressing a separate analytical question that the others cannot adequately answer. The Freudian framework asks why Mitty’s fantasies arise—that is, through which psychic mechanisms desire is repressed and redirected into fantasy. The Jungian framework addresses what his fantasies contain; in particular, it examines why the hero archetype recurs so persistently and what this reveals about the unresolved tension among the persona, the shadow, and the ideal self. The Lacanian framework, in turn, investigates how fantasy is produced and structured by language itself—specifically, how linguistic and auditory triggers disrupt the symbolic order and open the transition to the imaginary. The study suggests that Mitty’s fantasies are not merely escapist acts of daydreaming but also a survival strategy of the fragmented psyche; a strategy that both conceals and reveals the individual’s inability to reconcile desire with the demands of social reality.
