The Relationship Between Terrorism and Basic Macroeconomic Indicators in Turkey
Öz
Terrorism, which affects economic agents, their behavior and their expectations for the future, can lead to significant changes in the fundamental dynamics of macroeconomics. Similarly, a change in the macroeconomic indicators of countries can directly affect the formation of terrorist activities. In order to understand the effect of terrorism on economic and financial structure in Turkey, the effect of terrorist activities on sectors has been examined. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the relationship between basic macroeconomic indicators such as real gross domestic product, consumer price index and total investment amount, which directly affects social welfare, and terrorism through Pairwise Granger causality test and VAR method. For this purpose, as a result of the annual analysis of the 1968-2015 period taken from the Global Terrorism Database and the World Bank Economic Indicators Database, it is clear that terrorism and per capita real gross domestic product are one way Granger causality from terrorism to per capita real gross domestic product; between terrorism and total investment, a one-way Granger causality from terrorism to total investments has been identified. According to the results of variance decomposition, in the short run the most effective explanation for a change in terrorism used as a dependent variable is the per capita real gross domestic product, total investment and consumer price index respectively; in the long run, total investment, per capita real gross domestic product and consumer price index are the most effective explanation for a change in terrorism respectively.
