Business Students’ Attitudes Towards and Competency in Information Technology

Öz

As a result of wide spread use of information technology (IT) in businesses, the need for IT-competent workforce is escalating. This need is also becoming very important for business graduates who can work in many areas and in different positions. The purpose of this study is to determine the IT competency of undergraduate business students and find out their attitudes towards IT since attitude is an important factor for the acceptance of IT. For this purpose, the attitudes of business students towards and competence in IT have been studied using data gathered from 394 undergraduate business students. As a result of the study, it has been found that most of the students own computers and have a good level of access to IT resources but their perceived level of competency is low. Moreover, female students compared to male students, students who don’t own a computer compared to students owning a computer and students who have high levels of access to IT compared to those with lower access show higher anxiety about IT, feel they have less control when they face a problem related to IT and have lower perceived level of IT competence. Also, depending on which year they are in, students show different attitudes towards IT and their competence increases as they become more senior. Finally, it has been found that different dimensions of attitude have effects on IT competence

İşletme Bölümü Öğrencilerinin Bilgi Teknolojilerine Yönelik Tutumları ve Yeterlik Düzeyleri

Öz

İşletmelerde bilgi teknolojileri (BT) kullanımının giderek yaygınlaşmasının bir sonucu olarak, bu teknolojiler konusunda yüksek beceriye sahip çalışan ihtiyacı artmaktadır. Bu ihtiyacın farklı alanlarda ve pozisyonlarda çalışan işletme bölümü mezunları için de giderek arttığı görülmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, işletme bölümü öğrencilerinin BT yeterlik düzeylerini ortaya koymak ve BT’nin benimsenmesinde önemli bir faktör olan BT’ye yönelik tutumlarını belirlemektir. Bu amaçla işletme öğrencilerinin BT tutumları ve yeterlik düzeyleri 394 işletme bölümü öğrencisinden toplanan veri kullanılarak çeşitli değişkenler açısından incelenmiştir. Çalışma sonucunda, öğrencilerin çoğunun bilgisayar sahibi olduğu ve genel olarak BT erişim olanaklarının iyi düzeyde olduğu ancak BT becerileri konusunda kendilerini yeterli görmedikleri ortaya çıkmıştır. Ayrıca bayan öğrencilerin erkeklere göre, bilgisayarı olmayan öğrencilerin bilgisayar sahibi olanlara göre, BT erişim olanakları düşük olan öğrencilerin erişim olanakları daha iyi olanlara göre, BT konusunda daha yüksek düzeyde kaygı taşıdıkları, BT ile ilgi sorunları çözmede kendilerini daha zayıf hissettikleri ve algılanan BT yeterlik düzeylerinin daha düşük olduğu görülmüştür. Ayrıca farklı sınıflardaki öğrencilerin BT tutumları ve yeterlikleri açısından farklılık olduğu ve üst sınıflardaki öğrencilerin algılanan BT becerileri konusunda genel olarak daha iyi durumda oldukları bulunmuştur. Bu bulgulara ek olarak, BT tutumunu oluşturan farklı boyutların BT becerileri üzerinde etkili olduğu görülmüştür
