Testing The Benoit Hypothesis For The Turkish Economy

Öz

Defence expenditures are one of the symbols in the field of economic and political power of countries in international platform. Due to global military concerns, the role of defense expenditures, one of the important parameters of the security of countries, is increasing, and this situation may create effects on growth. This matter gains importance for Turkey due to its geo-political location.In this study, the validity of Benoit Hypothesis is investigated for the period of 1980-2017 of Turkey. In this context, the relation between variables was examined by means of unit-root, ARDL cointegration and causality tests. According to the results obtained from the analyses a negative relation was determined between defense expenditures and long-run growth rate in the long-run. Besides, according to Toda-Yamamoto causality results, there existed a bi-directional causal relationship between the two variables.

Türkiye Ekonomisi Açısından Benoit Hipotezinin Testi

Öz

Savunma harcamaları, uluslararası platformda ülkelerin ekonomik ve siyasal sahadaki gücünün simgelerinden biri durumundadır. Küresel askeri kaygılara bağlı olarak, ülkelerin güvenliği açısından önemli bir parametre olan savunma harcamalarının rolü artmakta ve bu durumun da büyüme üzerinde etkileri olabilmektedir. Mevzubahis konu jeopolitik konumu gereği Türkiye için ayrıca önem ihtiva etmektedir. Bu çalışmada Benoit Hipotezi’nin geçerliliği Türkiye’nin 1980-2017 dönemi için araştırılmıştır. Bu bağlamda değişkenler arasındaki ilişki, birim kök, ARDL eş-bütünleşme ve nedensellik testleri ile sınanmıştır. Elde edilen analiz sonuçlarına göre, savunma harcamaları ile uzun dönem büyüme oranı arasında uzun dönemde negatif yönlü bir ilişki tespit edilmiştir. Ayrıca Toda-Yamamoto nedensellik sonuçlarına göre de bahsi geçen değişkenler arasında çift yönlü nedenselliğin varlığına rastlanmıştır.
