The Impact of Political Stability on Carbon Emission in Turkiye

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 24 Sayı: 4, 1882 - 1896, 30.10.2025

The increase in carbon emissions is considered one of the main causes of global warming, and this situation brings with it serious environmental threats such as climate change, drought, floods, heat waves, forest fires and rising sea levels. These effects negatively affect not only natural ecosystems but also economic activities, public health and social structure. Therefore, it is of great importance to correctly determine the main factors affecting carbon emissions and to develop effective, holistic and sustainable policies for these factors. In the existing literature, it is stated that carbon emissions are generally related to variables such as economic growth, energy consumption and industrialization. However, in recent years, the role of political factors, especially political stability, on environmental sustainability has become increasingly important. Political stability is a decisive variable in terms of implementing long-term environmental plans, ensuring investment security and supporting green technology initiatives. In this context, how political stability coincides with sustainable development goals is also important. In the study, the effect of GDP and political stability on total carbon emissions was revealed in the analysis carried out with the Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model (ARDL) using annual data on total carbon emissions, political stability and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) variables for the period 1990-2023. According to the findings, the increase in political stability and economic growth has an emission-increasing effect in the long term. This situation can be explained by Turkey's characteristic of being a developing country.
