Food Insecurity and Its Sociodemographic Determinants Among University Athletes
Öz
Although it is known that college students are at risk of food insecurity, studies focusing on the prevalence of food insecurity among college athletes in Turkey are quite limited, and the literature on this topic remains insufficient. This study aimed to investigate the sociodemographic determinants of food insecurity among university athletes. The study included 212 volunteer student athletes (88 women and 124 men) enrolled in the Faculty of Sports Sciences at Süleyman Demirel University during the 2025–2026 academic year and actively participating in various sports. The Food Insecurity Scale for Athletes was used to assess levels of food insecurity. Data analysis revealed a normal distribution; statistically significant differences were detected based on gender, age, department, grade level, housing type, monthly income, and skipped meals (p<0.05). It was observed that men were more affected by food insecurity compared to women. Additionally, it was found that food insecurity scores were relatively lower among obese individuals. The findings indicate that university athletes are in a vulnerable position regarding food insecurity due to rising living costs and difficulties in accessing education, housing, and food.
