Reframing Household Waste within Supply Chain Systems: A Systematic Review and Conceptual Framework

According to the United Nations Environment Programme, global municipal solid waste generation reached approximately 2.3 billion tons in 2023, a significant share of which originates from households. In parallel, the growing emphasis on circular economy (CE) practices has highlighted household waste as a critical resource within supply chain systems. This paper consolidates the state of the art research on household waste supply chain management. The purpose of this study is to systematically synthesize this literature by adopting a process-based supply chain management (SCM) perspective. Using a content-analysis based systematic literature review approach, 493 peer-reviewed journal articles retrieved from the Web of Science database published between 2015 and 2025 were analyzed. The findings identify the dominant research streams associated with major SCM processes, from which a household waste supply chain framework integrating CE principles with established SCM processes is proposed. This study provides insights that are particularly relevant for countries facing increasing household waste generation and offers a structured foundation for future research and policy development.
