The rapidly advancing technologies of the digital age and the widespread use of the internet have significantly affected the perception of religion and belief, as in many aspects of society. Traditional religious practices and belief systems have gained a new dimension thanks to digital media channels, and the expression and dissemination of beliefs have changed in a way never seen before. This study aims to examine the effects of digital media on religion, changes in the definition and practices of religiosity, and the religious communities and practices developing in this new environment from a sociological perspective. Digital media has the capacity to influence both individual and social aspects of religion. People can access religious information more quickly through online platforms, compare different perspectives, and share their beliefs with a wide audience. This situation has necessitated religious authorities and organizations to reshape their functions and the methods of managing and distributing religious knowledge. While traditional religious organizations use the internet and social media to reach and interact with their followers, new generation religious movements and personal religious interpretations have also had the opportunity to reach large audiences through these platforms. With the digital era, religiosity has become a universal phenomenon, overcoming geographical limitations and cultural barriers. Virtual prayers, digital religious communities and religious sharing on social media demonstrate the diversity and flexibility of the modern understanding of religion. However, this change brought about by digitalization has also given rise to new discussions such as questioning religious authority and bringing individual belief to the fore.
The subject of “Media, Religion and Piety in the Digital Age” is a very broad and dynamic subject with many subheadings. Although many studies have been done on this subject, the rapid change of digitalization and media necessitates current studies. Due to the depth of the topics, existing publications are related to limited subheadings, giving way to a study containing more subheadings. In this study, the subject of "Media, Religion and Piety in the Digital Age" is discussed under various subheadings. For this purpose, "Google Akademik" based article scanning was conducted using keywords. The 100 articles found are divided into the following sub-topics according to their subject and content: 1) Pre-Digital Revolution and Digital Revolution, 2) Internet, Social Media, 3) Digitalization, Modernity and Religion, 4) Effects of Digitalization on Society, 6) Digital Communication and Digital Religion, 7) Digitalization and Religious Practices, 8) Digital transformation and religion values, 9) Mobile Applications, Youth and Pilgrims, 10) Religion in the Pandemic Period, 11) Positive and Negative Aspects of Social Media Use.
The conclusions obtained from the examination of the scanned sources are as follows: (1) The internet and media have a great impact on its users. It provides the opportunity for institutions, organizations, groups and individuals to share their religious understanding and practices freely and relatively unlimitedly in an environment that has no time or space limitations and has a participatory feature. (2) The Internet and the media strengthen religious practices by creating and disseminating religious communities. It provides the user with the freedom to dominate the shared content. It plays a role in reinforcing the bonds of religious communities. Thus, it functions as a religious transformer (3) The internet and the media provide a great opportunity to convey religious messages to other people, members of religious organizations and non-members. (4) the internet and the media provide new possibilities for forms of experience such as religious or spiritual devotion, abstinence, withdrawal, unity and community. (5) The Internet and media provide the opportunity for virtual-spirituality or religious practice. (6) The Internet and religious media are an environment where products, programs and services with religious content circulate freely, thus creating a common religious culture. (7) The media and the Internet protect children against other harmful factors by keeping them in the religious sphere. (8) The Internet plays an active role in pilgrimage organizations and communications between pilgrims.
As a result, the digital era has raised new questions and research areas in sociological studies on religion and religiosity. The effects of the media on religion, modern interpretations of traditional beliefs, and the relationship of digital platforms with religion are among the issues meticulously examined by today's sociology. The effects of this transformation process on the religious identities of individuals and the general religious structure of the society stand out as an important area worth researching in the future.
