Scholarly Networks and Intellectual Interests in Sixteenth-Century Ottoman Syria: An Analysis Based on al-Kawakib al-saʾ ira

Öz

Syria (Bilad al-Sham), a long-standing center of learning, came under Ottoman rule in 1516. While scholarship has examined the institutional, administrative, and individual aspects of scholarly life in the region during the first century of Ottoman rule, a prosopographical study offering an overall view of its intellectual landscape remains overdue. I address this lacuna by analyzing the scholarly connections and intellectual orientations of Ottoman Syria through Najm al-Din al-Ghazzi’s (d. 1651) al-Kawakib al-saʾira, a biographical dictionary of the sixteenth-century Muslim elite. I examine 557 individuals listed in al-Kawakib who originated from Syria and died between 1527 and 1592. Using UCINET and other visualization tools, I map their teacher–student relationships and analyze patterns of textual engagement, including books authored, read, and taught. Allowing for the limitations of the data, I argue that scholarly life in Ottoman Syria was grounded in strong local traditions while remaining open to transregional connections. In particular, intellectual ties with Egypt inherited from the Mamluk period continued, whereas connections with the Ottoman core lands developed more slowly. Overall, Syria emerges as a cohesive regional center rather than an isolated or fully reoriented provincial periphery.
