Examining the Relative Age Effect in Olympic Greco-Roman Wrestlers

Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to examine the existence of the Relative Age Effect (RAE) in Olympic male Greco-Roman wrestlers. Methods: The birth dates of the male Greco-Roman style wrestlers participating in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games and the result data of the games were obtained from the accessible web pages of the International Olympic Committee. The presence of RAE was examined by distribution of 97 athletes (27.63±4.21 years) according to their birth months and 4-quartile. In addition, the distributions according to months were examined in terms of medalists, weights and qualifying variables. The frequency of athletes observed per month and quarter of birth was compared using the Chi-Square test. Results: It was found that there was a significant difference in the general distribution of the athletes' birth months according to quarters (p<0.01). For all athletes, the highest value was observed in the 1st quarter (42.3%) and the lowest value was observed in the 4th quarter (18.6%). RAE were not found on medalist, weight and qualifying groups. Conclusion: We can conclude that despite the presence of RAE in the general distribution of Olympic male Greco-Roman wrestlers, it is not affected by the success situation in itself. However, since the athlete group is the most successful international athletes, it can be said that RAE is related to success.

Olimpik Greko-Romen Güreşçilerde Bağıl Yaş Etkisinin İncelenmesi

Öz

Amaç: Bu çalışmada, Olimpik erkek greko-romen güreşçilerde Bağıl Yaş Etkisi’nin (BYE) varlığının incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Yöntem: Tokyo 2020 Yaz Olimpiyat Oyunlarına katılan erkek greko-romen stil güreşçinin doğum tarihleri ve oyunların sonuç verileri Uluslararası Olimpiyat Komitesinin erişime açık web sayfalarından elde edilmiştir. BYE varlığı, 97 sporcunun (27,63±4,21 yıl) doğum ayları ve üçer aylık 4-çeyrek dilime göre dağılımları yapılarak incelendi. Ayrıca aylara göre dağılımlar madalya kazanma, sıkletler ve tur geçme değişkenleri açısında da incelendi. Doğum ayı ve çeyreği başına gözlemlenen sporcu frekans sıklığı Ki-Kare testi kullanılarak karşılaştırıldı. Bulgular: Sporcuların doğdukları ayların çeyrekliklere göre genel dağılımında anlamlı düzeyde fark olduğu bulundu (p<0,01). Tüm sporcularda en yüksek değer 1. çeyrekte (%42,3) ve en düşük değer ise 4. çeyrekte (%18,6) gözlendi. Madalya kazanan grup, sıkletlere ayrılmış grup ve turlara göre gruplamada ise BYE bulunmadı. Sonuç: Olimpik erkek greko-romen güreşçilerde genel dağılımda BYE varlığına rağmen kendi içinde başarı durumundan etkilenmediği değerlendirmesini yapabiliriz. Fakat sporcu grubu uluslararası en üst düzey başarılı sporcular olduğu için BYE’nin başarı ile ilişkili olduğu söylenebilir.
