Intoxication Cases Admitted to Edirne State Hospital Emergency Department Between 2006-2008 and 2017-2019: A Retrospective (10- year change)

Aim: Poisoning cases are increasing day by day in our country. Each country's poisoning profile differs. The aim of this study was to investigate the ten-year change in poisoning cases admitted to Edirne State Hospital Emergency Department between 2006-2008 and 2017-2019. Materials and methods: In this study, demographic characteristics such as age, gender, season, month, day, arrival time, type of intoxication, route of poisoning and poisoning agent, which were admitted to Edirne State Hospital. A total of 1025 intoxication cases were recorded between 2006–2008, and 968 cases between 2017–2019. Results: During 2006–2008, 58.6% of intoxication cases were women and 41.4% were men, whereas during 2017–2019, 53.9% were women and 46.1% were men. Poisonings occurred mostly in summer and winter in both study periods. In the first period, the highest rates were in January, June, and August, while in the later period, they were in October and July. In both study periods, the highest number of admissions occurred in the 21–30 age group, and oral ingestion was the most common route of poisoning. Drug intoxications increased from 46.8% in the first period to 64.9% in the second. Conclusion: Significant differences were observed between the two periods in terms of months of admission, gender, age distribution, poisoning agents, routes of exposure, and types of intoxication.
