Evaluation of the Career Planning Course from Student and Faculty Perspectives: A Case Study at Bursa Technical University

Öz

This study examines the evaluations of students and instructors regarding the Career Planning course, which became mandatory for first-year undergraduate students at Bursa Technical University during the 2023–24 Spring semester. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected from 53 students and 8 instructors to assess views on the course’s content, delivery, and overall effectiveness. Thematic analysis of student responses revealed four main themes: the general perception and benefits of the course, the teaching process and use of materials, the role of the instructor, and critical feedback. Students found the course helpful in developing career awareness and noted that sectoral talks and the instructor’s approach increased their motivation. However, they criticized the limited interaction, and the lack of content tailored to their specific departments. Instructor feedback produced five key themes: evaluation of content and delivery, student motivation and participation, technical and structural constraints, course timing and relevance, and suggestions for improvement. Instructors found the course constructive and appropriate for first years; however, they pointed out technical limitations and content overload, recommending the inclusion of more practical components to enhance learning outcomes. The findings align with the literature, showing that career planning courses support students' cognitive and behavioral growth.

Kariyer Planlama Dersinin Öğrenci ve Öğretim Üyesi Perspektifinden Değerlendirilmesi: Bursa Teknik Üniversitesi Örneği

Öz

Bu çalışma, 2023–2024 Bahar döneminde Bursa Teknik Üniversitesi’nde birinci sınıf lisans öğrencileri için zorunlu hale getirilen Kariyer Planlama dersine ilişkin öğrenci ve öğretim üyesi değerlendirmelerini incelemektedir. Karma yöntem yaklaşımıyla yürütülen araştırmada, dersin içeriği, işlenişi ve genel etkililiğine yönelik görüşleri değerlendirmek amacıyla 53 öğrenci ve 8 öğretim üyesinden veri toplanmıştır. Öğrenci yanıtlarının tematik analizi dört ana tema ortaya koymuştur: dersin genel algısı ve katkısı, öğretim süreci ve materyal kullanımı, öğretim üyesinin rolü ve eleştiriler. Öğrenciler, dersin kariyer farkındalığını geliştirme açısından faydalı olduğunu belirtmiş; sektörel söyleşiler ve öğretim üyesinin yaklaşımını motivasyonu artıran unsurlar olarak vurgulamıştır. Ancak, sınırlı etkileşim ve bölüme özgü içeriğin eksikliği eleştirilen noktalar arasında yer almıştır. Öğretim üyesi görüşlerinden beş ana tema elde edilmiştir: içerik ve işleyişe yönelik değerlendirmeler, öğrenci motivasyonu ve katılımı, teknik ve yapısal sınırlılıklar, dersin zamanlaması ve eğitsel uygunluğu, geliştirme önerileri. Öğretim üyeleri dersi yapıcı ve 1. sınıf düzeyi için uygun bulmuş; fakat, teknik sınırlamalar ve içerik yoğunluğuna dikkat çekmişler, öğrenme çıktılarının artırılması için daha fazla uygulamalı unsur önerilmiştir. Bulgular, kariyer planlama derslerinin öğrenci gelişimine bilişsel ve davranışsal katkı sağladığını gösteren literatürle örtüşmektedir.
