Öz

Aim of study: The aim of the study was to evaluate the general perceptions of the large transformation projects by people living in urbanized region of the Trabzon city.

In the questionnaires, the demographic characteristics of the users, the level of knowledge about the urban transformation projects and the similarities between the old and new form of the mentioned areas were investigated.

Main results: The results of the study revealed that Zağnos Vallley project was the most approved one among all regeneration projects. Increasing rate of green coverage, rising recreational potential and biological diversity were the most influential factors in decision process of the interviewees.  The previous form of the study areas were not preferred by the participants. Therefore, the participants were not approved the regeneration process in case of preserving its initial form and features. The lack of recreational opportunities, contradiction with city identity and texture and not having an attraction could be the main factors that affect the results of the decision making on urban transformation projects.

Research highlights: Trabzon is one of the most important coastal settlements in Turkey regarding its unique cultural and natural properties. Urban transformations in Trabzon were carried out for achieving not only physical change of the landscape but also for better social, economical and sustainable living habitats. The relationship between urban identity and urban transformation in this study could guide to future rehabilitation or regeneration projects. Suggestions and recommendations were made for the potential urban transformation projects based on results and findings of the current study.
