FRANCE-TÜRKİYE INFLUENCE RIVALRY IN THE MAGHREB: GEOPOLITICAL IMPLICATIONS OF ALGERIA’S COLONIAL CRIMES LAW
Öz
This study aims to analyze the geopolitical implications of Algeria’s proposed Colonial Crimes Law within the context of the influence rivalry between France and Türkiye in the Maghreb region. The research examines how colonial memory is transformed into a legal and symbolic instrument that shapes contemporary foreign policy strategies and power competition. Employing a qualitative research design, the study is based on the analysis of official state documents, international organization reports, parliamentary records, and foreign policy discourses. The findings demonstrate that the law does not merely represent an attempt at historical reckoning but functions as a strategic tool that undermines France’s regional legitimacy while facilitating Türkiye’s emergence as an alternative partner in the Maghreb. The analysis reveals that memory politics and legal frameworks have become integral components of contemporary geopolitics, complementing traditional military and economic power instruments. In conclusion, the Algerian case illustrates how post-colonial memory is mobilized as a normative and strategic resource in international relations, offering an original contribution to the study of Maghreb geopolitics and post-colonial power competition..
