The objective of this study is to explore secondary school students’ perceptions of physical
education (PE) courses by means of metaphors. The data for this study consisted of 367
secondary school students, 173 females and 194 males, from the provinces of Elazığ and
Malatya in Turkey during the 2013-2014 spring term. A structured interview form that asked
the respondents to fill in the sentence “Physical education classes are like ……………; because
……………” was used. The data collected were analyzed and interpreted applying the content
analysis method. According to the findings, the metaphors used by the students were classified
under eight categories using the headings “course content, promoting, relieving, love, point
of view, activating, exploratory, and exhilarating”. At the end of the research, it is proved that
there are positive perceptions for physical education lessons in the metaphors are created by
students concerning this lesson.
