Percieved Impact of Tourism: A Scale Adaptation Study

Öz

The effects of tourism have been a topic of interest for researchers and policymakers for many years. These effects have been studied from many different perspectives, with research focusing on local communities being notably limited. The main aim of this study is to adapt the "Perceived Impacts of Tourism" scale developed by (Godovykh et al., 2023) into Turkish. To this end, data was collected from 201 participants using a convenience sampling method. After obtaining the necessary permissions from the authors and the ethics committee for the adaptation of the scale, translation-back translation, expert review, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted. The adaptation process of the scale followed the steps recommended by the International Test Committee (ITC) meticulously. The scale consists of eight items and two dimensions (positive impacts and negative impacts) just as in the original version. The Turkish-adapted scale has been shown to be a valid and reliable measurement tool. The results obtained indicate that the scale is now ready to measure the impacts of tourism on the local community in Turkey, which has a significant tourism potential. In this context, the scale is expected to guide future researchers working on the effects of tourism at the national level.
