Critical Examination of Sustainable Tourism Destinations through Nietzsche’s Three Metamorphoses of the Spirit

Öz

Early human history shows that humans have always tended to survive by overcoming basic needs. However, as it transited into the neolithic age, the motivation of consumption has evolved beyond satisfying the basic human needs. Humans prioritized possessing properties including environmental resources. As natural resources became the symbol of economic and political power as well as higher level in the social hierarchy, tools and means have also evolved to achieve higher production and consumption. In the context of evolution, societies have evolved into different classes which possess wealth and resources signified distinction of classes. Consequently, domination of powerful groups/classes ensued throughout history. Nonetheless progress in creativity and innovation have never ceased to exist that eventually resulted in catastrophic ecological decline. Despite myriads of interdisciplinary theoretical and empirical researches on sustainability and sustainable tourism destinations, concerns about persistent social, environmental and economic challenges growing significantly. Against this backdrop, comparatively little has been devoted to exploring the transformation of human nature such as its values, desires and behavioral orientations. Alas, most of the mainstream studies have failed to translate into tangible successes in implementing sustainability. Accordingly, a fundamental question emerges can sustainability goals be achieved solely with classical approaches or should human nature be explored to identify underlying causes of failures in sustainability efforts. Hence, this conceptual and critical paper aims to analysis sustainable tourism literature based on Nietzsche’s ‘Three Metamorphoses of the Spirit’ to present a novel philosophical perspective. As a result, this study aimed to delve into human behavior and motivation as the main culprits that resulted in declining ecological systems and failed to achieve the sustainability goals.
