Spatial Design of Kulliye: Urban Design Concept and Development Process of Ottoman Social Complexes in Anatolia
Abstract
The
Külliye has been an important factor in representing social, political,
religious, economic and military structures. Külliye's were first developed in
the 11th century in Anatolia and perceived as one of the most important symbols
and structures of the Ottoman Empire era, with specific detail and unique
approach to urban design. Public and commercial functions were served as a
whole to society by complex and detailed buildings such as palaces, mosques,
hospitals, refectories, caravanserais, bazaars, madrasahs etc.
The Külliye determines the spatial awareness and
planning of gates, centres, and the direction of the development of the cities,
which holds high significance in order to analyse cities by their diversifying
spatial, functional qualifications and size. Spatial dimensions with strong and
defined stylistic features contribute to develop such notions including urban
identity, urban memory and sense of place. Spatial features of Külliye's have
also diversified in concept according to purpose of establishment, statues,
location and other infrastructures. Urban design concept of Külliyes is notable
for today’s social space design and current use of term should be examined in
terms of public qualities.
