The Problem of Spatial Exclusion of the Aged: Urban Right Principles and Social Work Approach

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 18 Sayı: 1, 68 - 93
https://doi.org/10.35674/kent.1520789

Öz

This review addresses the problem of spatial exclusion of the elderly in urban life and evaluates social service interventions within the framework of the “urban right” principle. The neglect of the 'age' factor in the design of public spaces creates disadvantages for groups such as the elderly, children and youth, and leads to older people not being able to fully benefit from the opportunities offered by urban life. This situation causes physical, emotional, social and economic problems among the elderly. In this study, social service recommendations based on the principle of the “urban right” are presented in order to solve these problems and to enable the elderly to take part in urban life in a more active and integrated manner. Social work prioritizes the welfare of the elderly, who are among disadvantaged groups, and aims to empower them and improve their overall quality of life. Particularly in cities, social work offers a variety of supports to meet the specific needs of older people, aiming to ensure their access to city resources and equal opportunities. This approach aims to increase the effectiveness of social work in urban areas and promote public awareness and advocacy on the rights of older persons.
