PILGRIMAGE AS ASCENT: NARRATIVE AND RITUAL MOVEMENT IN THE CANTERBURY TALES AND SUMELA MONASTERY

This study examines pilgrimage through the concept of ascent, arguing that upward movement constitutes a foundational logic of Christian devotional travel across literary and ritual forms. Focusing on Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales and the pilgrimage to Sumela Monastery, the study proposes ascent as a comparative framework that explains how pilgrimage produces ethical, spiritual, and communal transformation. While Chaucer’s pilgrimage unfolds along a geographically level road, it achieves ascent through narrative sequence, moral hierarchy, and discursive regulation, culminating in penitential self-examination. By contrast, the pilgrimage to Sumela enacts ascent materially through vertical geography, bodily exertion, and sensory ritual encounter, embedding devotion within the physical experience of climbing toward a sacred site. Drawing on pilgrimage studies, ritual theory, and Byzantine art history, the article treats literature and ritual as semiotic systems that organize movement through graded intensity and disciplined progression. By placing narrative and ritual ascent in dialogue, the study demonstrates that pilgrimage is defined less by destination than by the structured process of upward movement that reorients participants toward transformation. The article thus advances ascent as a transferable analytical lens for the comparative study of pilgrimage across media, traditions, and historical contexts.

HAC YOLCULUĞU OLARAK YÜKSELİŞ: CANTERBURY HİKAYELERİ VE SÜMELA MANASTIRI’NDA ANLATISAL VE RİTÜEL HAREKET

Öz

Bu çalışma, hac olgusunu yükseliş kavramı üzerinden inceleyerek yukarı doğru hareketin, edebî ve ritüel biçimler boyunca Hristiyan hac yolculuğunun kurucu mantığını oluşturduğunu ileri sürmektedir. Geoffrey Chaucer’ın The Canterbury Tales adlı eseri ile Sümela Manastırı’na yapılan hac ziyaretine odaklanan araştırma, yükselişi, hac deneyiminin etik, ruhsal ve toplumsal dönüşüm üretme biçimlerini açıklayan karşılaştırmalı bir çerçeve içerisinde sunmayı amaçlamaktadır. Chaucer’ın haccı coğrafi olarak düz bir yol üzerinde gerçekleşse de anlatı düzeni, ahlaki hiyerarşi ve söylemsel düzenleme aracılığıyla bir yükselişi temsil eder ve bu süreç tövbeyle sonuçlanır. Buna karşılık Sümela haccı, kutsal mekâna doğru tırmanmanın fiziksel deneyimi içine yerleşen dikey coğrafya, bedensel çaba ve duyusal ritüel yoluyla yükselişi somut bir biçimde ele alır. Hac çalışmaları, ritüel kuramı ve Bizans sanat tarihi yaklaşımlarından yararlanan bu araştırma, edebiyat ile ritüeli, hareketi giderek artan bir yoğunluk ve disiplinli bir ilerleme üzerinden düzenleyen göstergebilimsel sistemler olarak ele almaktadır. Anlatısal ve ritüel yükselişi karşılaştırmalı biçimde ilişkilendiren bu çalışma, haccın varış noktasından ziyade katılımcıları dönüşüme yönelten yukarı yönlü bir hareket süreciyle tanımlandığını göstermektedir. Böylece çalışma, yükselişi, haccın farklı coğrafyalar, gelenekler ve tarihsel bağlamlar arasında karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenmesi için aktarılabilir bir analitik kavram olarak öne sürmektedir.
