A SOCIOLOGICAL RESEARCH ON THE LOCAL PEOPLE’S PERCEPTION OF VIOLENCE AND THE REALITY OF VIOLENCE IN ORTAHISAR DISTRICT OF TRABZON

According to the Violence against Women and Family Members Survey Report of the Human Rights Committee of the Turkish National Grand Assembly, one of the current reports on the issue, compared to 2008, in 2011, the greatest increase in domestic violence in Turkey was observed in Trabzon (five times more). This study aims to present the dominant perception of violence and the reality of violence experienced in Ortahisar District of Trabzon through the quantitative data collected in a research conducted in 2016. In line with this aim, sometimes by making comparisons between genders in the research population, the results of the research on the most commonly used types of violence, the factors that led people to commit violence or to turn them into victims, the purpose and frequency of use of violence and the awareness of victims on their legal rights were evaluated. In order to reach the data that best reflect the truth about the population with different material and spiritual life conditions, a survey, of the quantitative research methods, was used and the obtained data were evaluated through the SPSS 20 program. The study finds out that violence prevails in all areas of life in the district of Ortahisar; and it is committed mostly in families, by males against females and by females against children. It is also found out that mostly physical and verbal violence were committed in the district and the majority of the victims are not aware of the legal arrangements against violence or they abstain from getting judicial assistance. Finally, based on the research data, the study includes some suggestions on how to stop violence.
