THE POPULATION STRUCTURE OF GIRESUN IN THE MID 19TH CENTURY ACCORDING TO THE POPULATION REGISTERS

Öz

A population census reveals gender, age, occupation, language, religion, education status and the number of individuals that make up a society. For this reason, studying sociological, economic and historical aspects of a society is very important for researchers who will write the social history of a society. The first general population census of the Ottoman Empire, in a modern way, was conducted in the reign of Mahmud II. This census identified the number of muslim males that were suitable for military service, and the groups of Jizya, a tax collected from the non-Muslims to meet the needs of the new army that replaced the abolished Janissary Corps. Based on the population registers numbered 1131 and 1133 in the Prime Ministry Ottoman Archive, this study investigated the Muslim and non-Muslim populations of Giresun, age groups of the people living in the town and rural areas, birth-death rates, Jizya groups and the amounts that the non-Muslims paid.

NÜFUS CERİDE DEFTERLERİNE GÖRE 19. YÜZYILIN ORTALARINDA GİRESUN’UN NÜFUS YAPISI

Öz

Nüfus sayımları, bir toplumu meydana getiren fertlerin sayı, cinsiyet, yaş, meslek, dil, din ve öğrenim durumlarını ortaya koyar. Bu nedenle, toplum-ların sosyolojik, ekonomik ve tarihî yönlerini araştırmak, sosyal tarihlerini yazmak için çalışma yapacak olanlar açısından oldukça önemlidir. Osmanlı Devleti’nde modern anlamda ilk nüfus sayımı II. Mahmud döneminde yapılmıştır. Bu sayımda, ülkedeki askerliğe elverişli müslüman erkek sayısı tespit edilirken, Yeniçeri Ocağı’nın yerine kurulan yeni ordunun da ihtiyacının karşılanması için gayrimüslimlerin verdikleri cizye grupları tespit edilmiştir. Bu çalışmada Başbakanlık Osmanlı Arşivinde 1131 ve 1133 numarada kayıtlı Nüfus defterlerinden faydalanılarak Giresun’un müslim ve gayrimüslimlerin; şehir ve köyde yaşayanlarının yaş grupları, doğum-ölüm oranları, gayrimüslimlerin ayrıca verdikleri cizye grupları ve miktarları ele alınmıştır.
