A Bibliometric Analysis of Publications on Digitalization and Religion

Öz

This article presents a bibliometric analysis of studies conducted within the framework of “digitalization and religion,” a research area that has gained increasing popularity in recent years and has evolved into a distinctly interdisciplinary field. The main problem the article seeks to address is providing a systematic snapshot of the current state of the literature. The objective of this study is to comprehensively evaluate the existing literature on the intersection of digitalization and religion. Therefore, a bibliometric analysis will be conducted, with a focus on identifying prevailing trends in the field. The study employs bibliometric analysis as its primary methodological approach, analyzing 2,586 publications retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database using the keywords “digital*” and “religio*,” and applying both descriptive and relational bibliometric techniques. In the descriptive analyses, the distributions of publications by year, and document type are examined, along with leading authors, countries, journals, publishers, and research areas. In the relational analyses, citation networks, co-authorship patterns, co-citation structures, and keyword co-occurrence networks are visualized at the levels of authors, countries, institutions, and sources using the VOSviewer software. The findings demonstrate that scholarly research on digitalization and religion has expanded substantially since 2010, with a pronounced acceleration after 2020, largely driven by the COVID-19 pandemic and the rapid diffusion of emerging digital technologies. Citation and co-authorship network analyses identify pioneering scholars, notably Heidi A. Campbell and Oren Golan, as central figures shaping the field. At the institutional level, Texas A&M University and the University of Haifa stand out as major contributors, while the United States and the United Kingdom maintain dominant positions at the national level. At the same time, the growing visibility of Indonesia, Malaysia, Türkiye, Brazil, and South Africa indicates an increasingly global research landscape. Among publication venues, Religions emerges as the leading journal.
