Empathetic leadership

Öz

Empathy is generally associated with understanding the feelings of others. While leadership is a
concept related to influencing others to behave in the desired direction. If the leader acts by understanding the
feelings of others while influencing them, this will be a positive situation for both the leader and the followers. In
the literature, researchers have conducted many studies on leadership. In the literature, studies have been carried
out starting from the personal characteristics of the leaders who have come to the fore historically, and leadership
styles have been investigated by elaborating and increasing until today. One of these concepts is empathetic
leadership. While it is a concept that has been researched in the international literature, there is almost no research
on the concept of empathetic leadership in the national literature. As a method, Web of Science, Google Scholar,
and YÖK Thesis Centre databases were used to access the related articles and theses, respectively. The words
empathy, leadership, and empathic leadership were searched in the databases. The literature review was conducted
between September and October 2024. It was observed that there was no thesis on empathic leadership in the YÖK
thesis center. It was observed that there are few articles on empathy and leadership, and there are only a limited
number of studies on the concept of empathic leadership. This study aims to contribute to filling this gap in the
national literature by offering insights into the concept of empathetic leadership.

Empatik liderlik

Öz

Empati genel olarak başkalarının duygularını anlamakla ilgilidir. Liderlik ise başkalarını etkileyerek
istendik yönde davranmalarını sağlama ile ilgili bir kavramdır. Lider başkalarını etkilerken onların duygularını
anlayarak hareket ederse bu durum hem lider hem de takipçileri için olumlu bir durum olacaktır. Literatürde
araştırmacılar tarafından liderlikle ilgili oldukça fazla çalışma yapılmış olduğu görülmektedir. Literatürde
çalışmalar tarihî olarak öne çıkmış olan liderlerin kişisel özelliklerinden başlayarak günümüze kadar
detaylandırılarak ve artarak sürmüş olup liderlik tarzları araştırılmıştır. Bu kavramlardan birisi de empatik
liderliktir. Uluslararası literatürde araştırma yapılan bir kavram iken ulusal literatürde empatik liderlik kavramı
ile ilgili araştırmaların yok denecek kadar az olduğu söylenebilir. Yöntem olarak ilgili makalelere erişim için Web
of Science, Google Scholar ve Türkçe tezlere erişim için YÖK Tez Merkezi veri tabanları kullanılmıştır. Veri
tabanlarında empati, liderlik ve empatik liderlik kelimeleri taratılmıştır. Literatür taraması Eylül-Ekim 2024
tarihlerinde gerçekleştirilmiştir. YÖK tez merkezinde empatik liderlikle ilgili araştırma tarihinde hiç tez olmadığı
görülmüştür. Empati ve liderlik olarak az sayıda makalenin var olduğu gözlenmiş ve empatik liderlik kavramıyla
ilgili çalışmanın kısıtlı olduğu görülmüştür. Bu çalışmada ulusal literatürde görülen empatik liderlik alanındaki
boşluğu doldurma anlamında bir miktarda olsa katkı sağlanması amaçlanmıştır.
