A Multi-Criteria Decision Making Framework for Student Admission in Applied Engineering Projects Using AHP, TOPSIS and MARCOS: A Case Study in the Industrial Engineering Department

Öz

Applied engineering projects contribute to the education and professional development of engineering students. For the success of projects and benefit of all stakeholders, admission of suitable students is essential. This study offers an effective, structured and fair approach by combining Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) and Measurement of Alternatives and Ranking according to Compromise Solution (MARCOS) methods for this purpose. Six evaluation criteria are determined: GPA, communication skills, collaborative working ability, attendance commitment, compatibility of student with project and project experience. The weights of the criteria are determined using AHP. Then candidate students for the projects are ranked using TOPSIS and MARCOS. MARCOS complements TOPSIS by providing a utility-based ranking of alternatives. The case study was conducted for student admission for “Industry Applications” project-based elective course taught by the author to illustrate the practicality and effectiveness of the proposed approach. Sensitivity analyses were conducted. The consistent ranking results of TOPSIS and MARCOS along with the sensitivity analysis results demonstrate the robustness and the validity of the proposed approach. This study presents a practical and evidence-based framework for the admission of the most appropriate students for applied engineering projects.
