Analysis of Quality Defects in Centrifugal Casting Using Statistical Process Control Techniques

Improving quality in manufacturing depends on identifying the causes of defects, accurately analyzing them, and implementing process improvements based on the findings. The primary objective of this study is to identify quality-related defects in a company that manufactures mill roll cylinders using the centrifugal casting process, analyze these defects through Statistical Process Control (SPC) techniques, and develop improvement actions based on the analysis results. Since numerous process parameters influence quality in casting operations, the study focuses on determining the root causes of defects by examining these parameters. A product model was selected from a company supplying the milling machinery industry, taking into account the sector’s quality requirements and customer expectations. Various statistical methods, including data classification, cause-and-effect (Ishikawa) diagrams, control charts, and regression analyses, were employed to evaluate defect data and identify the factors affecting product quality. The findings revealed that the hardness characteristics of the product constitute the most critical quality attribute influencing both product performance and customer satisfaction. Consequently, the study proposes process improvement measures aimed at maintaining hardness values within the desired specification limits. These improvements are expected to enhance process stability, reduce quality defects, and increase overall customer satisfaction.
