Öz

Çalgısal bir tür olan süit, Barok döneme özgü dans formlarının modern müzik anlayışı çerçevesinde yeniden yorumlanmasıyla 19. yüzyılın sonlarında yeniden önem kazanmıştır. Bu yeniden ilgi, 20. yüzyılda özellikle neoklasik yönelimler bağlamında süit türüne yönelen bestecilerin eserlerinde belirginleşmiştir. 20. yüzyılda bu türe yönelen besteciler arasında yer alan Arnold Schoenberg’in 1934 tarihli Suite in the Old Style for String Orchestra eseri, bu ilginin dikkat çekici örneklerinden biridir. Bu çalışmanın amacı; Schoenberg’in söz konusu eserinde yer alan Minuet, Gavotte ve Gigue bölümlerini, Barok süit geleneğindeki örnekleriyle ilişkilendirerek bestecinin dans kökenli bölümlere biçimsel açıdan yaklaşımını ortaya koymak ve bu incelemeyi, süit türünün 20. yüzyıldaki dönüşümüne ilişkin genel bir çerçeve içinde, neoklasisizm bağlamında konumlandırmaktır. Çalışmanın kapsamı, eserdeki dans karakterli üç bölümün incelenmesiyle sınırlandırılmış; Ouverture ve Adagio bölümleri serbest karakterli yapıları nedeniyle kapsam dışında bırakılmıştır. Bu çalışma, nitel araştırma yaklaşımı temel alınarak yürütülmüştür. Araştırmanın kuramsal arka planını oluşturmak ve Schoenberg’in yaşam öyküsünü incelenen eser bağlamında sunmak üzere çalışmanın odağıyla ilgili kaynaklardan yararlanılmıştır. Ayrıca, çalışmanın konusu ile doğrudan ilişkili besteciye ait seçili mektuplar, notlar ve eleştiriler ile Barok süit örneklerinin ilgili dans bölümlerinin ve eserdeki dans karakterli bölümlerin biçimsel özellikleri doküman analizi yöntemi kapsamında incelenmiş ve elde edilen veriler betimsel araştırma yöntemiyle değerlendirilmiştir. Bulgular, Schoenberg’in Menuet, Gavotte ve Gigue bölümlerinde Barok süit geleneğinin temel biçimsel ve ritmik çerçevesini koruduğunu; ancak armonik dil ve tematik işleme bakımından bu çerçeve içindeki müzikal kurguyu daha yoğun ve esnek bir anlayışla dönüştürdüğünü göstermektedir.

The suite, an instrumental genre, regained prominence in the late 19th century through the reinterpretation of Baroque-era dance forms within the framework of modern musical understanding. This renewed interest in the genre became evident in the 20th century, particularly in the works of composers who turned to the suite genre in connection with neoclassical tendencies. Arnold Schoenberg’s 1934 Suite in the Old Style for String Orchestra is one of the notable examples of this renewed interest in the suite genre in the 20th century. The aim of this study is to present Schoenberg’s formal approach to the dance-derived movements by relating the Minuet, Gavotte, and Gigue movements in Schoenberg’s aforementioned work to examples from the Baroque suite tradition, and to briefly situate this examination within a general framework concerning the 20th-century transformation of the suite genre in the context of neoclassicism. The scope of the study is limited to the analysis of the three dance-charactered movements in the work; the Ouverture and Adagio movements are excluded due to their free-charactered structures. This study was directed based on a qualitative research method. To establish the theoretical background of the research and to present Schoenberg’s life story in relation to the work under examination, sources relevant to the focus of the study were consulted. In addition, selected letters, notes, and critiques by the composer that are directly related to the topic of the study, as well as the relevant dance movements from Baroque suite examples and the formal features of the dance-charactered movements in the work, were examined within the scope of document analysis, and the data obtained were evaluated using the descriptive research method. The findings indicate that, while Schoenberg preserves the basic formal and rhythmic framework of the Baroque suite tradition in the Minuet, Gavotte, and Gigue movements, he transforms the musical construction within this framework through a more intense and flexible approach in terms of harmonic language and thematic development.
