In the evolutionary process, along with the increasing mental development
capacity, humans not only discovered the ability to use their voice, but also, as social
beings, they developed new communication ways as well as many other abilities, and
learned speaking. Singing started with humans’ imitating sounds of species’ voices
in nature. With the development of the art of singing, humans who want to reveal their
pain, happiness, and love, can do so through songs. Singing has become one of the art
forms that brings out the best efforts of one’s self-expression. The art of opera has
developed in such a quest for self-articulation. The human voice, the main instrument of
this art, is used quite beyond its natural limits. Since vocal cords are physiologically
located within the body, they can be affected by diseases and often wear out quickly
when used incorrectly. Therefore, vocal training also requires great care and
responsibility. In this article, in vocal training methods for opera, general information
regarding methods considered correct to be followed by the trainer was given in
addition to problems that may be encountered as a result of improper training methods
and techniques to protect voice health. Furthermore, the throat’s structure and voicebreath
system were briefly mentioned, coupled with a discussion on the cause-effect
relationship about the necessity of vocal training on the subject. As a result, indicators
of a trained voice were revealed in the light of this information. In this study, literature
research was used as a method, and at the same time, this information was also
consolidated with the students’ development process observed during vocal training.
Thus, this study was aimed to create resources for colleagues working in this field.
