Environmental Attitudes and Behaviors of College Students: A Case Study Conducted at a Kocaeli Ünıversitesi

Öz

Encouraging the adoption of a pro-environmental behavior is critical in order to reduce the
environmental impacts and to move toward a more sustainable future. University education plays
an important role in training individual who have an important role in protecting the environment
in the future. The aim of this study is to identify university students attitudes and behaviors and to
determine whether there are significant differences between college students depending on their
environmental course, age, gender, class level, settlement, parental education, parental occupation.
This study was carried out with 748 university students attending to the Kocaeli University. The
instrument used for data collection is the Environmental Attitudes Scale and a socio-demographic
questionnaire form. Although student's attitude toward environmental issues differs regarding age,
class level, fathers education and occupation and whether the students took lesson about
environment issues doesn’t differ regarding mother’s educational level, occupation, gender,
settlement.

Üniversite Öğrencilerinin Çevresel Tutum ve Davranışları: Farklı Değişkenler Açısından Kocaeli Üniversitesi Örneği

Öz

Çevre dostu bir davranışın benimsenmesini teşvik etmek, çevresel etkileri azaltmak ve sürdürülebilir bir geleceğe taşımak için kritik bir öneme sahiptir. Üniversite eğitimi gelecekte çevreyi koruyan bireylerin yetiştirilmesinde önemli bir role oynamaktadır. Bu araştırmanın amacı üniversite öğrencilerinin çevresel tutum ve davranışlarının ölçülmek ve çevre dersi, yaş, cinsiyet, sınıf düzeyi, yerleşim yeri, anne-baba eğitimi ve anne-baba mesleği gibi değişkenlere göre öğrenciler arasında önemli farklar olup olmadığının tespit Kocaeli Üniversitesinde öğrenim gören 748 üniversite öğrencisi üzerinde yürütülmüştür. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak “Çevresel Tutum Ölçeği” ve sosyo demografik anket formu kullanılmıştır. Öğrencilerin çevreye karsı tutumları onların cinsiyetlerine, çevre dersi almalarına, yerleşim yerlerine, annenin eğitimine ve mesleğine göre farklılık farklılıklar göstermemektedir. Üniversite öğrencilerinin babalarının eğitim durumu ve mesleği, sınıf düzeyi ve yaşa göre önemli farklılık göstermemektedir
