Abstract

Objective: In this study, commonness of depression, anxiety, stress and psychological support among medical students were searched. These variables were compared with sociodemographic variables and the relation between the risk factors and these variables was measured. Method: Total 348 students chosen by stratified sampling included the study between October 2012 and May 2013. All participants filled a sociodemographic survey and the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-42). The relationship between depression, anxiety, stress and psychological support status and possible risk factors and sociodemographic variables were searched. Also, 41%, 45% and 40,4% of the participants were found having signs of depression, anxiety and stress, respectively. There is no significant difference between scores of males and females. Students being dissatisfied with friendships, worry about physical appearance or having economical distress have higher depression, anxiety and stress scores and whose relatives diagnosed psychiatrical have higher depression scores. Anxiety scores of who preferred medical career for vocational fulfillment and depression scores of who are in an emotional relationship are low. Females were found more eager to psychological support than males. Conclusion: Symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress among medical students are common. The risk for these diseases seems increased including students having social and economic problems, being chosen medical career with outer effects and worrying about physical appearance. Although DASS-42 scores of males and females are similar, males are reluctant to psychological support. Subsequent follow-up and qualitative studies will give comprehensive information
