An Investigation of the Homophobia Levels of University Students In terms of Stigma and Gender Roles

The aim of this study was to examine the homophobia levels of university students in terms of stigma and gender roles. The study sample includes of 177 women (71,7%) and 70 men (28,3%), totalling 247 studentsfrom Psychological Counselling and Guidance Department of Çukurova University in the academic year of 2017-2018. The data were collected through Personal Information Form, Stigma Scale, Gender Roles Attitude Scale, Hudson and Ricketts Homophobia Scale. In the analysis of the data, Pearson Moments Multiplication Correlation technique and Multiple Relational Regression analysis were used. The findings suggested that university students who are biologically male have a higher tendency to stigmatize others with homophobia and have a relatively equalitarian attitude than female students. It was found that homophobia level was positively correlated with stigma and sexuality but negatively correlated with gender roles. In addition, stigma and gender roles have been found to predict homophobia of university students. However, the gender variable was not found to have a significant effect.
