THE SITUATION OF WORKING MOTHERS GIVING BREAST MILK TO THEIR BABIES DURING THE COVID-19 PERIOD

Abstract
Introduction:Breast milk is an essential nutrient source for infants, and it is crucial to maintain breastfeeding even during pandemic periods. The World Health Organization has also emphasized the importance of breastfeeding during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Purpose: This study was conducted as a descriptive study to determine the breastfeeding and effective breastfeeding status of working mothers for their 0–2-year-old babies during the complete closure of the COVID-19 epidemic.
Method: The study was conducted on 103 actively working mothers with babies aged 0-2 in the Elbistan district of Kahramanmaraş during the full lockdown period. Data were collected face to face and via Google Form using the non-probability snowball method; The Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale (short form) was used. Data were analyzed with percentage, mean, student-t test and ANOVA.
Results: The average age of the participating mothers was 29.89±3.83 years, and the average age of their babies was 27.89±4.37 months. The scale score average was calculated as 66.72±3.00 (56-70). It was determined that during the full lockdown period, 70.9% of mothers changed their working patterns, 47.6% worked from home, and 30.1% had COVID-19. It was found that 32.3% of mothers who had COVID-19 did not breastfeed their babies. It was determined that the average breastfeeding self-efficacy score of mothers who work in law enforcement, whose work schedule has changed, whose working environment is mixed workplace-home, who fed their babies with breast milk and formula when they were first born, who could not breastfeed their babies as they wanted, and who had attachment problems, was low (p <0.05). It was determined that the average score of mothers who took care of their babies themselves and did not receive support was higher (p=0.016).
Conclusion: It was determined that the breastfeeding self-efficacy scores of mothers who worked in law enforcement during the full lockdown period, whose working order changed, whose work environment was mixed workplace-home, and who had bonding problems with their babies, were low. It is recommended to support working mothers to breastfeed their babies, rearrange their working hours, and develop appropriate policies regarding breastfeeding during epidemic periods.
