The Philosophy of Life in the Poetry of Īliyyā Abū Māḍī
Öz
From the late nineteenth century onward, poets who migrated from the Arab world to North and South America for economic and political reasons and continued their literary activities in exile are called Mahjar poets. Iliyya Abū Māḍī (1889–1957) is one of the leading representatives of Mahjar literature. The poet, who emigrated to Alexandria, Egypt in 1902, remained bound to the metrical patterns of traditional Arabic poetry in his early poems under the influence of classical Arabic poetry and adopted a method dealing with classical themes. With his migration to the United States in 1912, his new environment offered him both different ways of thinking and new possibilities of expression. Indeed, there he founded the literary association al-Rābiṭatu’l-Qalamiyya together with figures such as Jubrān Khalīl Jubrān (1883–1931), Mīkhāʾīl Nuʿayma (1889–1988), and Nasīb ʿArīḍa (1887–1946); under their influence, he developed an original style and brought inner, spiritual, and philosophical dimensions to the fore in his poetry along with a romantic sensibility. His deep relationship with nature, his idea of freedom, and human and universal values endowed his poetry with both lyrical and philosophical depth. Drawing on a broad intellectual accumulation extending from Plato to the wisdom poets of the Abbasid period and to modern currents of thought, Iliyya Abū Māḍī placed reason, wisdom, and human experience at the center of his poetry. Considering poetry as a field of contemplation, Abū Māḍī came to be referred to as a “philosopher-poet” and made significant contributions to the development of Mahjar poetry and modern Arabic literature with his original philosophical approach to life, humanity, and existence. In Turkey, a study titled “On the Possibility of a Consolation Detached from Religion: Iliyya Abū Māḍī’s Ode Falsafatu’l-Ḥayāt” has been identified, which examines a single poem of Abū Māḍī that encourages an optimistic outlook on life. In the international field, the study titled “Îliyyâ Ebû Mâdî: Şâʿiru’t-Teemmul ve’l-Felsefe,” co-authored in 2006 by ʿInāyatullāh Fātihī Nejad and Muhammed Rızā Belverdī, and the article titled “Felsefetu’l-Ḥayāt ʿinde Îliyyâ Ebī Māḍī fī Ḍaw’i Şiʿrih,” prepared in 2023 by Bakht Zubair and Inam Ur Rehman, have been identified. Zubair and Rehman addressed Abū Māḍī’s poems within the framework of themes such as the search for beauty, acceptance of the present condition, indifference in the face of the certainty of death, and the metaphor of wine; however, they did not subject the poems they selected to an in-depth analysis. Nejad and Belverdī, on the other hand, made evaluations aimed at determining the philosophical character of Iliyya Abū Māḍī and stated that this philosophy exhibits different, and at times even contradictory, tendencies such as optimism, pessimism, and skepticism in many of the poet’s poems. Unlike these studies, the present study aims to reveal the poet’s philosophy of life from an existential perspective by addressing his poems within the framework of themes such as optimism, humility, generosity, love, and faith. In the study, thematic and philosophical reading methods were employed, and the poet’s life, understanding of poetry, and selected works were analyzed in a systematic manner. In the conclusion, it has been determined that the poet developed a humanist philosophy of life that addresses life along the axes of existence, nature, humanity, freedom, love, and thought, and that he is one of the pioneers of the existential line in Mahjar literature. It has also been revealed that the poet is one of the pioneering figures who brought existential questioning to the center of poetry within Mahjar literature.
