The Role of Cyprus in the Armenian Uprisings during the British Administration
Öz
The
process of annexation of the island of Cyprus to the Ottoman lands began with the conquest of Nicosia on 9 September
1570. This
process was virtually completed by the annexation of Magosa on 1 August 1571. The
island was legally under Ottoman rule through the Ottoman-Venetian Treaty
signed on 7 March 1573 and remained in the administration of the Ottoman State from 1571 to 1878. During the Ottoman-Russian War of 1877-1878, as
a result of the reconciliation of the Ottoman Empire by England against the
expansionist politics of Russia, a new era began in the administrative status
of the island. This reconciliation changed the fate of the island. An agreement
was signed on 4 June 1878 between the Ottoman Empire and Britain regarding
Cyprus. Both states agreed on common action and mutual assistance to Russia
according to this agreement. With this agreement, however, The Ottoman Empire
did not find what it hoped for from England. Besides it had to hand over the
administration of Cyprus to them. After entering the British rule, the island
of Cyprus soon turned into a base serving Armenians. In this context, this article includes arms
and human smuggling, army training of revolutionary Armenians, missionary
activities and similar activities carried out between 1878 and 1908 with the
aim of supporting the Armenian rebellions in the island.
