School principals’ perspectives on professional development needs and proposed solutions

Öz

This descriptive qualitative study aimed to examine the professional development needs of school principals working in public schools. Purposeful sampling techniques, including maximum variation and convenience sampling, were used to select twelve principals from public schools in Giresun. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that school principals’ professional development needs clustered around two main themes: management functions and individual competencies. In terms of management functions, participants emphasized the need to enhance effective and informed decision-making, involve stakeholders in decision-making processes, improve communication skills (particularly anger management and rational response strategies), strengthen leadership and strategic guidance capacities, and develop coordination and supervision skills. Regarding individual competencies, improving technological skills and foreign language proficiency were identified as key areas for professional growth. It was also observed that more experienced principals perceived their professional development needs as less pressing compared to their less-experienced counterparts. In conclusion, the study highlights the critical role of professional development in enabling school principals to demonstrate effective leadership, support teachers, and enhance student achievement. The findings suggest designing targeted, context-sensitive professional development programs based on continuous needs analysis and underscore the importance of supporting and recognizing school leaders who model lifelong learning.
