Over the years, people have faced many global problems and have been affected by these situations in various ways. The developmental period that individuals are in and their psychological characteristics are important factors that shape how these effects will be. It is thought that fear, which is one of the first reactions to life-threatening situations, may negatively affect the future designs of university students who are making plans for their future lives, but psychological resilience will play a protective role in this relationship. In this context, the mediating role of psychological resilience in the relationship between fear of COVID-19 and hopelessness in university students was examined in the current study. A hypothetical model predicting the mediating role of psychological resilience was established and the mediating role was examined in addition to the bilateral relations between the research variables. The sample of the study consisted of 530 university students (415 female, 115 male). Personal Information Form, COVID-19 Fear Scale, Beck Hopelessness Scale and Brief Psychological Resilience Scale were used to collect data. The created model was tested with structural equation modeling (SEM). As a result of the analyses, it was seen that the fear of COVID-19 predicted psychological resilience negatively and significantly; and psychological resilience predicted hopelessness negatively and significantly. When the mediating role of psychological resilience was examined, it was seen that the indirect effect was significant, and therefore psychological resilience fully mediated the relationship between fear of COVID-19 and hopelessness. In line with the findings obtained as a result of the research, suggestions were made in the form of carrying out implementation studies to improve the levels of psychological resilience in order to prevent university students from experiencing hopelessness as a result of negative experiences in society and to disseminate career counseling practices for planning the future.
