HERBERT SCHILLER’İN İLETİŞİM KURAM VE ARAŞTIRMALARINA KATKISI

Öz

Bu makalede, nitel tarihsel bir yaklaşımla, 1960’lı yıllardan itibaren ABD’de iletişimin ekonomi politiği alanında çalışmalar yapan, Herbert Schiller’in iletişim kuram ve araştırmaları alanına ne gibi katkılar yaptığı incelenmiştir. Buna göre, Herbert Schiller, Amerika’da iletişim araştırmaları alanında egemen olan davranışçı etki geleneğine karşı, eleştirel ekonomi politik yaklaşımla dünya sistemi/bağımlılık kuramları çerçevesinde kitle iletişim alanını kimlerin kontrol ettiği ve bu alanı hangi amaçlarla kullandığı sorusunun cevabını aramıştır. İletişim olgusunu, tarihsel ve toplumsal bağlamına yerleştiren Schiller, bütüncül ve diyalektik bir yaklaşımla, mülkiyet ve iktidar ilişkileri çerçevesinde, medya ve kültür alanındaki Amerikan askeri-sanayi kompleksinin egemenliğini, “kültür emperyalizmi” kavramıyla açıklamıştır

THE CONTRIBUTION OF HERBERT SCHILLER TO THE FIELD OF COMMUNICATION RESEARCHES AND THEORIES

Öz

With a qualitative and historical approach this article examines how Herbert Schiller, who has been studying the political economy of communicatıon in USA since 1960’s, has contributed to the field of communication theories and researches. With reference to this, Herbert Schiller asks and searches for the answer that who controls the field of mass communication and for what purposes it is used in the framework of the “World System” and “Dependency Theories” with a critical political economy approach which is against the tradition of dominant behavioral “researches of effect” in the field of communication in USA. Schiller, who has placed the communication phenomenon in the historical and social context, explains the American sovereignty in the field of media and culture with the concept of “cultural imperialism” with a holistic and dialectical approach, within the framework of property and power relation
