FIRST AID SELF-EFFICACY REGARDING HOME ACCIDENTS AND RELATED FACTORS AMONG MOTHERS OF CHILDREN AGED 0–4 YEARS: A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY

Öz

Objective: Home accidents are a significant public health issue during early childhood, and children aged 0–4 are more vulnerable to these accidents due to their developmental characteristics. This study was conducted to determine the levels of first aid self-efficacy regarding home accidents among mothers of children aged 0–4 and to identify the associated factors. Methods: This descriptive and correlational study was conducted online between February 2026- June 2026. The study included 133 mothers living in Turkey with children aged 0–4 years. Mothers were recruited using convenience sampling. Data were collected using a mother-child demographic information form and the First Aid in Home Accidents Self-Efficacy Scale. Data were statistically analyzed at a 95% confidence level. Results: The mean age of the mothers was 36.1±6.13, and the mean total scale score was 42.3±9.13. The mothers’ educational status (p=0.001), employment status (p=0.011), prior first aid training (p<0.001), and prior experience providing first aid to someone (p<0.001) significantly influenced self-efficacy scores. The child’s general behavioral trait (active, compliant, or calm) was found to be associated with self-efficacy scores (p=0.002). It was determined that 60.9% of the children had experienced at least one home accident, with falls (61.5%) and burns (22.1%) being the most common types of accidents. Conclusion: It was determined that mothers’ self-efficacy levels regarding first aid for home accidents were moderate to high, and that this level was influenced by the mother’s educational status, receipt of first aid training, and first aid experience. Receiving first aid training and having practical experience were identified as key variables that increased mothers’ self-efficacy levels. Therefore, the widespread implementation of community-based parent education programs is recommended.
