Exploring ESP Teaching Practices through a Genre-Based Lens: The Case of Management & Economics Domain at Mouloud Mammeri University

Within the context of Higher Education, the field of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) calls for pedagogical approaches that respond to the communicative demands of students preparing for specialised disciplinary domains. EFL teachers responsible for ESP courses in Management and Economics face a double challenge: supporting students’ general language development while also addressing the specific discourse and terminology of their field of study. In this respect, the present study explores how ESP is currently taught at the Department of Economics, with particular attention to the pedagogical focus adopted by instructors. Relying on a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected through an analysis of course syllabi and a questionnaire administered to ESP teachers. The findings indicate that ESP instruction in this context remains largely oriented towards vocabulary and language forms, with limited attention to genre awareness and disciplinary discourse practices. On the basis of these findings, the paper discusses the relevance of a Genre-Based Approach as a pedagogical perspective that could contribute to enhancing ESP teaching in Management and Economics, notably through the integration of language skills within authentic disciplinary genres.

استكشاف ممارسات تدريس الإنجليزية للأغراض الخاصة بمنظور قائم على الأنواع الخطابية: دراسة حالة في ميدان التسيير والاقتصاد بجامعة مولود معمري

يشكّل تدريس اللغة الإنجليزية للأغراض الخاصة في التعليم العالي مجالاً حيوياً يتطلّب استراتيجيات تعليمية مبتكرة تستجيب للحاجات المتزايدة للطلبة في التخصصات المختلفة. وفي أقسام الاقتصاد والتسيير، يواجه أساتذة اللغة الإنجليزية تحدياً مزدوجاً يتمثل في مساعدة الطلبة على تطوير كفاءاتهم في اللغة العامة من جهة، وتمكينهم من اكتساب المصطلحات الدقيقة والخطاب الأكاديمي المتخصص من جهة أخرى. ينطلق هذا البحث من دراسة واقع تدريس اللغة الإنجليزية للأغراض الخاصة في قسم الاقتصاد، ويقترح اعتماد المقاربة القائمة على الأنواع الخطابية باعتبارها إطاراً بيداغوجياً قادراً على إحداث نقلة نوعية في تدريس هذا المجال. وتقوم هذه المقاربة على دمج المهارات اللغوية في سياقات أكاديمية ومهنية أصيلة، بحيث يتمكن الطلبة من فهم النصوص التخصصية وتحليلها وإنتاجها وفق معايير الخطاب العلمي في مجالهم. وتكشف الورقة أن تطبيق هذه المقاربة لا يسهم فقط في تحسين الكفاءة اللغوية، بل يتيح للطلبة فهماً أعمق للبنية التواصلية للنصوص الاقتصادية والإدارية، مما يؤهلهم للتفاعل بفعالية مع متطلبات البحث الأكاديمي والمهني. وعليه، فإن اعتماد التعليم القائم على الأنواع الخطابية في تدريس اللغة الإنجليزية للأغراض الخاصة يمكن أن يشكل إضافة نوعية للجامعة الجزائرية ويعزز التكامل بين المعرفة اللغوية والمعرفة التخصصية..
